History of the Chelsea Flower Show
In 1862, London's Royal Horticultural Society held its first Great Spring Show. The show was held in Kensington and featured an array of exotic plant species from around the world. Each year until 1888, the RHS continued with this annual event, gradually building up a loyal audience.
By 1888, the group decided that the show would fare even better if moved to central London. They relocated to the famous Temple Gardens, situated between London's Fleet Street and the Embankment. In 1912, the powers that be at Temple Gardens decided to allow the Royal International Horticultural Exhibition to use the grounds for their annual show.
This left the Great Spring Show in need of a new home. They decided to use the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, which had hosted several successful rose exhibitions. The 1913 show at the Royal Hospital became known as the Chelsea Flower Show. It is now Britain’s most prestigious flower show. From the beginning it has contained both nursery exhibits and model gardens.
Every year there have been exhibits from foreign countries as well as from Britain. It is the flower show most associated with the Royal family, who attend the opening day every year.
