The FIFA World Cup 2026 made history as the first edition of the tournament to be jointly hosted by three countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. Held from 11 June to 19 July 2026, it was also the first 48-team World Cup, with 104 matches played across 16 host cities in North America.
The tournament delivered a spectacular celebration of international football, with more than 6.8 million fans attending matches across the three host nations. Spain lifted the trophy after defeating Argentina in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium on 19 July, bringing a memorable 39 days of football to a close.
Attention now turns to the FIFA World Cup 2030, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with three special centenary matches taking place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The tournament will mark 100 years since the inaugural World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, creating another landmark edition of football's greatest global tournament.
