We’re nearly there.
Wimbledon is the only tennis grand slam to be played on grass. For two weeks at the start of July the All England Club becomes the focus of the great and the good in the tennis world. Watched by discerning tennis enthusiasts, legends of the game and television cameras the competition starts with the many and ends with one person (or two for the doubles) holding the trophy or bowl aloft during the closing weekend.
The athletes may have played warm up tournaments in Birmingham, Nottingham, London’s Queen’s Club and at Stoke Park but this is it: The pinnacle of the grass court season. DTB’s team can’t wait to be there for each exceptional moment.
Winning A Grand Slam Is Never Easy
Sir Andy Murray has won here twice so far in his career but the big names will want to take the men’s title from him. Serena Williams won’t be playing this year so who will be the new holder of the women’s title?
It’s fair to say that the women’s top twenty and fortunes are changing frequently. Take the French Open as an example of the unpredictability of the game. Top seed Angelique Kerber went out in round one and a non-seeded player, Jelena Ostapenko, took the French Open women’s title in a match against number three seed, Simona Halep. In the men’s championship, Rafael Nadal won at Roland Garros for a record 10th time. However, although he has won Wimbledon, grass is not his best surface.
It would be wrong to discount any of the big five – Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawrinka and Djokovic, they all have weapons in their play that can bring down their rivals. Kei Nishikori and last year’s finalist Milos Raonic stand a fine chance too. Raonic lost to Murray at Queen’s and Wimbledon in the 2016 finals, has he found a way to beat him?
