With its global audience, the Artois Championships (now known as the British Tennis Championships) are recognised as one of the top 10 tennis events in the world. Held in the run up to Wimbledon, the Championships are consistently supported by the cream of men's singles and doubles players.
Since its inception in 1979, 26 of the last 28 Wimbledon champions have played at the Championships. Connors, Lendl, Edberg and Sampras are amongst the legends of the game who have proudly held the massive silver Artois Championships trophy aloft. And in 2008 Nadal joins the list of champions to win both the Artois and Wimbledon championships.
Recent Championships have been dominated by two former World No. 1 players - Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick. With Hewitt winning a hat-trick of titles between 2000-02, Roddick equalled the feat by doing the same between 2003-05. Hewitt then captured a fourth title in 2006, while Roddick defeated Nicolas Mahut in 2007 as they joined McEnroe and Becker as the only players to win four titles at the Artois Championships.
The 30th Anniversary of The Artois Championships also marked the final year of it’s sponsorship by InBev, owner of the Artois brand. The Tournament will continue to be run by the existing Event Team under the ownership of The Lawn Tennis Association and with a new sponsor for 2009. The Tounament will now be known as the British Tennis Championships.
